The Hutto hippo legend began in 1915, when a circus train stopped in Hutto to gather supplies and care for the animals. A hippo escaped from its keeper and ran toward Cottonwood Creek, according to legend.

 

According to reports, the train depot agent sent the following message to nearby communities: “Stop trains. Hutto has a rogue hippo.”
